APAICS Condemns Insurrection at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON—The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) is dismayed by yesterday’s events that took place at the U.S. Capitol. Our organization was founded on the belief that diverse and underrepresented voices ought to be amplified at every level of the political process. Yesterday’s seditious acts and deconsecration of our Capitol are inexcusable and we condemn it to its fullest extent. This was particularly concerning for us, as the safety of our colleagues, Fellows, and alumni, including members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, were trapped and afraid for their lives.

Working in public service is one of the greatest acts of service one can do. Yesterday’s events compromised the sanctity of this work and our democracy. To the staff, workers, members, and D.C. residents that were affected and whose safety was jeopardized, we offer our greatest commiserations. We thank our elected leaders for continuing to do the good and brave work as our nation’s democracy ensured a peaceful transition of power by certifying the electoral college results.

In the face of adversity, we will not let these domestic terrorists take away our democracy. We are a diverse resilient country that is pursuing a more perfect Union. APAICS is committed to its mission for a more representative government that includes Asian American Pacific Islanders at every level of the political process. The 2020 election has resulted in the election of the first Asian American to be elected to the White House and a record number of 21 AAPI members of Congress that represent both Democrats and Republicans. There is a path forward, and APAICS is proud to be part of a future where AAPI voices are heard and represented in our nation’s governance.
