APAICS Statement on the Mass Shooting in Monterey Park, California

WASHINGTON - On Saturday evening, over Lunar New Year weekend, an armed gunman entered a dance hall in Monterey Park, California, a predominantly Asian American community, killing ten individuals and injuring several others.

APAICS president & CEO Madalene Xuan-Trang Mielke released the following statement:

“We are horrified by the terrible attack that occurred in our community this past weekend. While there is still much that we do not know about the motive of the attack, we do know that our Asian American community is in mourning. Lunar New Year should be a time for celebration and reunion. Instead, this peace was broken by senseless violence.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and the community in Southern California.”

Monterey Park is represented by CAPAC Chair and APAICS Board Member Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-28).
