Utah State Representative, District 31
2025 Women's Collective Spotlight Awardee
Verona Sagato Mauga serves Utah’s District 31, representing parts of West Valley City and Taylorsville. Elected in 2024, she made history as the first Samoan woman elected to any state legislature in the continental United States.
A dedicated community advocate and organizer, Verona has focused much of her efforts on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) and other vulnerable communities. She is the co-owner of My Choice Utah, providing supportive host homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and co-owner of Sagato Bakery & Café, a family-run business. Additionally, she co-founded Le Malu, a nonprofit amplifying Pacific Islander voices and culture in Utah.
Verona's commitment to civic engagement is evident through her service as past president and civic engagement director of OCA Utah, and as chair of the Utah AAPI Democratic Caucus from 2014 to 2020. Her professional background in mental and behavioral health informs her compassionate approach to public service.
In her first legislative session, Verona successfully passed several bills:
HB 358: Protects children from predators in virtual spaces by strengthening laws around criminal solicitation involving avatars and virtual reality.
HB 248: Protects veterans from predatory financial practices.
