“A Conversation with AAPI Women of the 113th Congress” organized by the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) and sponsored by AARP will feature Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) and Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) who will share their experience as new Members of Congress at a panel discussion on Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. in the House Visitors Center Room 215. To RSVP for the event, visit bit.ly/APAICSWomen.
The congresswomen will discuss their broad range of experience touching on issues from work-life balance as a Member to financial security for women 50+. Nancy LeaMond, executive vice president of AARP’s State and National Group, will moderate the panel and Rep. Judy Chu (D-Ca.), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, will open the discussion.
“AARP is honored to join APAICS in hosting this conversation in recognition of Women’s History Month and the many contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander women,” said Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez, AARP’s executive vice president for multicultural markets and engagement. “We congratulate Reps. Gabbard and Meng on their recent appointments and look forward to working with them and their colleagues in the coming months.”
“Representatives Gabbard and Meng are two rising stars in the AAPI political community. Their groundbreaking elections and success are a sure sign that this will be a must-see event,” said Floyd Mori, APAICS President and CEO. “We are very grateful to AARP for making it possible.”
The 113th Congress is historic for Asian American and Pacific Islander women. For the first time, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus is composed of a majority of women. Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, is the first Hindu elected to Congress. Meng is the first Asian American to represent the state of New York.
APAICS will live stream the event, and social media participation is encouraged using the hashtag #ontheleadingedge. Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions via Twitter or Facebook.
