Database User Guide
A simple user guide for the Asian Pacific American Political Database
1. ACCESSING THE DATABASE
The database is located on our website: APAICS.org.
Towards the upper right of the home page is the “Resources” tab. Move the mouse over to the “Resources” tab and then click the “APA Political Database” link that appears just below. It also can be reached directly at APAICS.org/database.

2. CHOOSING THE TYPE OF DATABASE
There are two different databases: one of APA elected officials (blue), and one of APA political candidates (red). To alternate between the two, simply click the “SHOW” field in the upper left corner of the table and choose between “Elected Officials” and “Candidates for office.”
Note: Elected Officials running for re-election are not listed in the “Candidates” database. The “Candidates for Office” Database only lists candidates running for a new office.

3. SORTING THE TABLE
Across the top of the database table are four main column-labels: “First Name,” “Last Name,” “State,” and “Position.”
Clicking a column-label once will sort based on that column, and will do so in ascending alphabetical order (A-Z). Click the same label again to sort in descending alphabetical order (Z-A).

4. USING THE BASIC FILTERS
There are two basic filters located across the top of the database table: “State” and “Party”.

By clicking either one, a drop-down menu will appear, and from it you can choose a specific state or party. Once a filter is clicked, that filter is automatically applied, and the table will display only the relevant APA officials.
You may choose to use only one filter or both. If you choose to use both, the two filters will act together.
5. USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION
The search function allows you to search entire profiles for specific names or keywords. Simply type what you are looking for in the search bar and click the “>>” button or hit “Enter” on your keyboard.
If there are filters chosen, the table will search only within the relevant officials.

6. USING THE ADVANCED SEARCH FUNCTION
Below the search bar is the option to use the “Advanced Search”. By clicking this option, a list of four additional filters appears: “Gender,” “Ethnicity,” “Level” (Local/State/Federal), and “Status” (Current/Former).
These are used in the same way as the other filters. Simply click the box beside whichever filter you want to specify, choose from the drop-down menu, and then click the “>>” button. You can also use the advanced search without actually typing anything into the search box. This gives you freedom to choose additional filters without having to know an APA official’s exact name, position, etc.

7. RESETTING THE TABLE TO SHOW ALL APA OFFICIALS
Resetting the table easily allows you to remove all filters, showing the full, default list of APA officials. You can reset the table by clicking “RESET FILTER” in the upper right corner of the database.

8. REPORTING CORRECTIONS/SUGGESTING ADDITIONS
If there is anything that is missing/incorrect, or if there is an APA elected official that you would like to suggest be put into the database, please contact Gene Kim at Gene@apaics.org.
