APAICS February 2012 newsletter
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities are making great political strides in New Orleans and in the Gulf Coast. Louisiana is home of one of two AAPI governors: Governor Bobby Jindal. Joseph Anh Cao’s term in the U.S. Congress has emboldened new generations of Southeast Asian community leaders in New Orleans and beyond, who are making their voices heard on behalf of the AAPI fisher folk impacted by the oil spill. Earlier this month, Bernardette D’Souza, an Indian American longtime legal aid attorney won a special election for the city’s first family court judgeship that she helped to create.
To support this surge of AAPI activism and influence, APAICS and the New American Leaders Project (NALP), are pleased to introduce our APAICS Regional Leadership Academy / NALP Ready to LEAD program in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 30-31, 2012, to help AAPI community leaders further leverage their political strength.
Apply today to attend the APAICS Regional Leadership Academy, March 30-31, 2012, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
APAICS Regional Leadership Academy is a day and half training designed to demystify the process of running for political office for AAPI community leaders and organizers. This training is built to support the AAPI political growth and help community leaders strengthen their skills necessary to succeed and advance in the public sector. The training will focus on public speaking, campaigns, fundraising, and building a political base. Following the training, APAICS is hosting a Day of Dialogue during the afternoon of March 31st. This open community forum will consist of a series of roundtable discussions on AAPIs and the political landscape in New Orleans, multiracial coalition building, access to local, state, and federal government, and serving in the public sector.
The New American Leaders Project (NALP) is the only national organization specifically focused on preparing first- and second-generation immigrants for civic leadership. Nearly one in five Americans is an immigrant or a child of immigrant parents. NALP believes that through civic engagement and leadership, immigrants and their children can help strengthen the fabric of American democracy. NALP recruits recognized individuals with a track record of civic involvement and trains them in the key skills needed for leadership.
The APAICS Regional Leadership Academy in New Orleans will be APAICS’s second regional collaboration with NALP. This month, APAICS and NALP will launch its collaborations in Southern California. APAICS and NALP invite you to join a class of outstanding AAPI leaders of the Gulf Coast. Travel and lodging stipends may be available based on need and availability.
Apply today to attend the APAICS Regional Leadership Academy, March 30-31, 2012, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
These events are sponsored by Sodexo and Southwest Airlines, APAICS’s official airline.
