Biography
Michael A. Gin is currently serving on his 2nd Term as the 28th Mayor of the City of Redondo Beach, having been reelected as Mayor in March 2009.
Since May 2003, Mike has served as a field deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. He represents Supervisor Knabe in the communities of San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Westfield, Academy Hill, and the cities of Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates. Additional assignments that Mike has with the County of Los Angeles include serving as the Information Technology Deputy for Supervisor Knabe, and serving as Supervisor Knabe's representative to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Transit Authority and the South Coast Botanic Garden.
As Mayor, he currently serves as a Vice Chair of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission, Honorary Chair of the Redondo Beach Sister Cities Committee, Delegate to the Los Angeles County City Selection Committee, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the District 5 and South Bay Cities Boards of the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. In 2009, Mike was elected to the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors. Mike also serves on the Energy Committee of the US Conference of Mayors.
In the Summer of 2007, Mike was named as a David Bohnett Fellow of the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute and attended and completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Executive Education Program at the Kennedy School at Harvard University.
He previously served as District 3 Councilman for the City of Redondo Beach from 1995-2003 and retired from the City Council due to term limits. During his two terms as Councilman, he served as an alternate Director of the Los Angeles County Sanitation District, an alternate Director of the South Bay Council of Governments, and as member of the Board of Directors for the Independent Cities Association. Mike's interests in youth and education issues allowed him to serve as Chairman of Redondo Beach's City Council/School Board Subcommittee.
Prior to his election to the City Council in March 1995, Mike was Vice-Chairman of the Redondo Beach Planning Commission (member from 1992-1995) and was previously Chairman of the Redondo Beach Preservation Commission (member from 1989-1992).
Mike has served as a Counselor and panel speaker for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation seminars (HOBY). HOBY brings together outstanding high school sophomores from throughout California to participate in its annual leadership seminar. The students interact personally with various business, community, and political leaders and talk about current issues and problems. Mike was a high school student ambassador in the HOBY program in 1978.
In 1999, Mike was one of seven Chinese-American municipal elected officials in LA County honored with CAUSE's (Chinese Americans United for Self-Empowerment) "Citizen of the Year" award for contributions and service to the LA Chinese-American community.
Also in the same year, Mike was selected as one of fourteen elected officials from across the country selected to participate in the Elected Officials Leadership Academy sponsored by the Asian Pacific Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) in Washington, DC.
In 1993, he was honored by the Redondo Beach Jaycees and the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce as "Young Man of the Year" for his dedication and years of service to the Redondo Beach community.
Prior to joining the Supervisor Knabe's staff, Mike was a Technical Support Services Manager with Infonet Services Corporation in El Segundo, CA. Prior to joining Infonet, Mike was a Senior Member of the Technical Staff with TRW in Redondo Beach, CA. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in 1984. In his spare time, Mike enjoys traveling, snow skiing, working out, and playing the piano.
