Biography
Maile Shimabukuro has served as the State House Representative for District 45 (Wai‘anae, Makaha, Makua), since 2003. During the 2009-2010 Legislative sessions, Maile served as the Vice Chair of the Hawaiian Affairs Committee, and as a member of the Education, Higher Education, Human Services, and Health Committees. She was and remains a member of the Hawaiian and Women's Caucuses.
Maile graduated from the University of Hawai‘i William S. Richardson School of Law, Colorado College, and ‘Iolani School. She holds a B.A. in English, and a J.D.
Representative Shimabukuro is an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of HI, and represents clients in public benefits, housing, family, and consumer matters. She has also worked as a law clerk in State District Court; legal assistant to Alan B. Burdick, Esq.; research assistant to Professor Eric Yamamoto; and reporter for The Leeward Coaster.
Maile, who is half Okinawan and half Chinese, grew up in Wai‘anae. She has a son, Keani, and a stepdaughter, Emma. Maile is the proud daughter of Karen Young, a nurse practitioner at Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC), and James Shimabukuro, a professor at Kapi‘olani Community College. Her stepfather is Dr. Fred Dodge. Maile's interests include surfing, the outdoors, politics, and travel.
