Biography

Jenny Yang is currently a Senior Financial Aid Counselor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, where she counsels students about financing their education in higher education. She manages federal and state aid programs, and private endowed funds to assist low-income and first generation students. She serves as the Advisor to the Asian American Women’s Group at Augsburg College, where she facilitates discussions to empower the women to believe in their potential by using leadership development as a model, and to examine their gender and racial identity. She is passionate about ensuring college access for low-income and first generation students through financial means, at the same time, empowering students through self-advocacy, leadership growth, and identity construction.

In her free time, Jenny shares her knowledge about the financial aid process through presentations at high schools and community non-profits. Jenny has led presentations and workshops about authentic leadership development at Augsburg, MN Association of Financial Aid Administrations conference, and the Hmong National Conference.

Jenny is a graduate of the first Hmong Women Leadership Institute cohort in 2007 hosted and organized by Hnub Tshiab: Hmong Women Achieving Together. She served as facilitator and coordinator of the Leadership Institute in 2008 and 2010.

Jenny received the Anheuser-Busch/Frank Horton Fellowship in 2004, and worked for U.S. Representative Michael Honda. Following the Fellowship, she worked at the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) as the Advocacy Initiative Director representing the interests and concerns of Southeast Asian Americans.

Jenny has served on the Board of Hnub Tshiab: Hmong Women Achieving Together, MN Association of Financial Aid Administrators, and Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership. Jenny received her Masters of Arts in Leadership in Student Affairs from the University of St. Thomas, and Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College.
