Biography
Darlene Mortel was born and raised in Seattle, Washington to immigrant Filipino parents. She received her BA from the University of Washington in Ethnic Studies and Political Science. While there, she worked on increasing awareness of race relations and how it could be improved. In the summer of 2001, Darlene was an APAICS intern at the Department of Labor’s Office of Public Affairs. Her junior year, she was elected to the Associated Students of the UW Board of Directors as the Director of Programming. The following year, Governor Gary Locke appointed her to be the Student Regent on the UW’s Board of Regents. As a member of isangmahal arts collective, she travelled across the nation to perform spoken word poetry at Asian American campus events. She also started doing human rights work with Anakbayan-Seattle. Darlene then earned her MA at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in American Studies. For two years she served as Chairperson for SanDiwa, a national youth organization under the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON). After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles where she continues human rights work and art through Habi Arts, an arts collective that uses art as a medium for social change. Darlene joined the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center in July 2010 as the Program Director.
Darlene was a 2001 APAICS Summer Intern and was placed at the Department of Justice, Public Affairs Office.
